The Volsung Universe:

Volsung is a webcomic set in the distant future, hundreds of years after an assault by mysterious extraterrestrials nearly destroyed all life on Earth. Humanity escaped extinction when a few thousand left the planet on a large spaceship - then finding a new home in a solar system hundreds of light years away. However, colonization was difficult due to a time-consuming terraformation, plus constant attacks by indigenous monstrous lifeforms.

Luckily, the human refugees were aided by a race of powerful alien beings that had been trapped there since the original inhabitants of that solar system left nearly a millennium ago. Calling themselves "Aesir" after mythological entities, they became humanity's benefactors and a theocracy was established to follow their seemingly prophetic guidance. It was with their aid that new technologies arose: large humanoid mechs and battleships to combat the hostile monsters - and "Sequencing", a long-lost science that borders on the mystical and holds many exciting possibilities to advance human society beyond imagining.

All is not well with the universe, though. Least of all with the crew of a certain freelance cargo ship and their everyday struggle to make ends meet...

The Cast:

Valen Percival Lowell

Owner and captain of the Thiazi, founder of Tantalus Freelance, and our central protagonist. Formerly a test pilot for a military contractor, an accident with a prototype changed everything and now he tries to make ends meet with the Thiazi. However, Valen's business sense is ham-handed at best and things never seem to turn out right for him; a curse that inspired the naming of his business. He is a talented swordsman wielding a katana, incorporating the Sequencing he used as a test pilot into his sword style, and has heightened senses from his timber wolf genetics. Valen also "inherited" a massive collection of vinyl records and is a prog-rock savant as consequence.

Valen

Ryoko Orikasa

The Thiazi's computer systems specialist and part-time pilot. Ryoko is fresh out of a programming trade school and had no luck finding work until Valen hired her. Ryoko sees the world through her computer monitor, and is often reminded by others of how naive and inexperienced she is as consequence. Still, she refuses to give in, inspired to keep moving forward by futurists and progressive individuals that she looks up to and follows religiously...on the GalacticNet via social media.

Ryoko

MacKinzie "Mack" Claude Duval

Tantalus Freelance's "investigative consultant". A former I.P.I.B. (Intergalatic Police and Investigation Bureau) detective turned private investigator, Mack "The Knife" (as he was called in his police days) was hired by Valen for his excellent marksmanship and detective skills - and because he is a fantastic cook! However, Mack has a slightly distorted view of justice and a penchant for violence that hints at past scars - behaviors that often have him at odds with the others.

Mack

Elysium "Elly" Cécile Renault

A scientist and blogger who studies Sequencing and reports her findings on her website. Hires the crew of the Thiazi to help her find her missing mentor, Kilroy Preston, after the Thiazi hijacking attempt at the start of the story. She is now a "part-time" crew member in exchange for their services. While not a talented or even willing combatant, she has proven effective in dangerous situations with her clever use of Sequencing. Despite her claims of lacking any form of faith or belief, she is easily drawn to events and topics that defy scientific explanation and seems driven to prove something her mentor could not...

Elly

Dr. Abe "Doc" Okawara

Head engineer and the doctor of the Thiazi. "Doc" spends most of his time keeping the ship operational and the crew from getting killed. When Valen originally bought the ship, Doc was already on board and "came with the purchase", demanding to continue residence on the Thiazi in exchange for his services. He rarely talks about himself, but considering that he's in his fifties he's bound to have a long history, many secrets, and an intimate knowledge of the Thiazi itself...

Doc

Ginrei "Rei" Hadaka

Justicar for the Sequencer's Union. Rei's reputation is spotty at best, due to her "throw caution to the wind" approach to apprehending her targets, but she always gets results! Rei's generally cheery "go-get-em" attitude underlies a very honest personality. She seemingly has some kind of past with Valen. Status: it's complicated. (More to come...)

Rei

Kilroy Thomas Preston

One of Elysium's college professors and her mentor. After performing a supposedly dangerous experiment with Sequencing, he abruptly left everything behind and now constantly travels the galaxy. Elysium is looking for him to learn the results of the experiment and why he left her a cryptic note that simply said: "I wish you had believed me"...

Don is a writer and blogger currently based in southwestern Virginia. His passions are creative writing, comics, and productivity; and he aspires to write, speak, and broadcast (via podcast) about these things a great deal. He aims to use this webcomic to refine his ability to write for a non-prose medium, to bring to life some ideas he thinks make for awesome sci-fi stories, and to work towards something worth being proud of. When he isn't writing about these characters or about trying to be better at being creative, he enjoys "vidya games", reading complicated novels, and watching giant robots beat the crap out of one another.

SpookyElectric is an illustrator, graphic designer, sequential colorist, and aspiring animator living in southwestern Virginia. It's a little bright there, but he's getting used to it. He enjoys many dorky passtimes, and spends much of his time with his wife, writing, drawing, coloring, philosophizing, and playing various nerdy games. His goal with this webcomic is to slowly develop his artistic skills and give his illustrations some much-needed improvement and speed.
